Our history

The story behind Hot & Cold liniment began when Doctor Joe C. Spruill, who was a doctor with a doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Kansas, already started the production of the Aloe Vera product in the fifties. He, together with Bill Coats, George Warren and Haske Finds, all skilled biochemists and pharmacologists, formed the research team that began in earnest the attempts to analyze Aloe Vera. These efforts eventually led to a stabilization method that allowed Aloe Vera's medicinal properties to be preserved for longer than 48 hours.

Only in 1968 did they finish their work and were able to present the method that extended Aloe Vera's shelf life to 5 years, with all the positive medicinal properties retained.

After Dr. Spruill's death in 1983, his family continued to run the business until 1990 when the petition was handed over to Jan Heinrich.

Jan was for many years Dr. Spruill's close collaborator and the one who was trusted to pass on his manufacturing and knowledge. This means i.a. that Jan conducts the preparation with the same medical precision as Dr. Spruill. Quality comes before quantity!

For more than 40 years, the product has existed in Sweden and under our auspices for more than 20 years with many loyal customers, private as well as therapists.

The product is unique and consists of organically grown Aloe Barbadensis plants from Southern California, the ultimate climate to ensure the vitality and stability of raw aloe vera gel. Ripe aloe vera leaves are selected and harvested in advance so as not to destroy the substances that naturally occur in the inner leaf gel. The liniment is made in small batches to maintain the quality and integrity of the natural ingredients.

Why has the formula been updated in Hot & Cold?

New EU regulations have come into effect, stating that methyl salicylate cannot be included in creams above a certain percentage. The formula has been adjusted to this percentage and compensated with additional essential oils and magnesium.

Why does it get warm and cold when using Hot & Cold?

In addition to massage itself stimulating blood circulation, the essential oils in Hot & Cold enhance the warmth and cold sensations.

I feel more cold than warm. Why is that?

How one experiences warmth and cold is very individual and varies from person to person. However, it is most common to initially feel warmth, which then transitions into cold.

Are there any ingredients that cause side effects in Hot & Cold?

Our Aloe Vera is grown on organic farms in California and is used in its natural form, meaning it is not pasteurized or water-reduced. All beneficial nutrients remain intact. The cream also contains natural vitamins and essential oils. The preservatives used are approved by both the Medical Products Agency and the Food Agency. No parabens. There is always someone who may be allergic to something, even if it's a natural ingredient. Please refer to the ingredient list to be sure of what is included.

When should you use Hot & Cold?

Originally, Hot & Cold was mainly used by therapists who needed a powerful liniment but also wanted to protect their hands. Since the cream is aloe vera-based, it is also healing for the skin. Today, it is a very popular self-care product and is used to soften stiff muscles and joints.

I used to buy Hot & Cold at a health store. Why is it no longer sold there?

In early 2024, Faxma Natural Care ceased operations. One of the co-owners took over the product rights and relaunched Hot & Cold, initially selling exclusively through their webshop. However, several health food stores have now restocked Hot & Cold in their assortments.

Can children and pregnant women use Hot & Cold?

In order to recommend products for children and pregnant women, there must be specific research supporting their use for these groups. There is no such research available.

Can you be in the sun after applying Hot & Cold?

Yes. However, note that the cream does not contain any SPF protection.

I work as a therapist and use larger quantities. Do I have a different price list?

Currently, there is only one price list for everyone. However, for larger purchases, discounts of up to 30% are available:

Shop for 600 SEK (incl. VAT) = free shipping

Shop for 1000 SEK (incl. VAT) = 10% discount

Shop for 3000 SEK (incl. VAT) = 20% discount

Shop for 5000 SEK (incl. VAT) = 30% discount

What makes Hot & Cold special compared to other liniments?

What sets Hot & Cold apart is its base of unpasteurized, enzyme-active Aloe Vera. All enzymes and anthraquinone compounds remain intact, creating an excellent synergistic effect with the included liniment ingredients and plant-based oils.

This is the limit for shipping as a merchandise letter, and the shipping cost will be a reasonable 99 SEK including VAT. Contact us if you require a larger order.

What happens if Hot & Cold gets in your eyes?

It will sting in the eyes but it will pass quickly. Rinse with lukewarm water if necessary.

What is the shelf life of Hot & Cold?

When you receive it, the product is date-stamped for approximately 2 years ahead. Once the jar is opened, it lasts for 1 year. However, this should be taken with a grain of salt – in practice, it lasts much longer. The only change that may occur is that the color might darken slightly, but the effect remains the same.
